Instructions for TymNet OutDials:
For example, if you wish to connect with the outdial port in Norfolk, Virginia
you would enter Username:6896;password. The following information would then
be displayed:

TYMNET ASYNC OUTDIAL 6986 (804) 857 NORFOLK , VA

>

At the “>” prompt, you may type “help” and receive the following screen:

>help
Set [Half] [Rxon] [Xon] [Even:Space] [Crdelay]
Half – sets half-duplex communications. Default is full-duplex.
Xon – sets flow control for data you send. Default is no xon.
Rxon – sets flow control for data you receive. Default is no rxon.
Even – sets even parity for data sent. Default is no parity.
Space – sets space parity for data sent. Default is no parity.
Crdelay – set printer carriage return delay. Default is no delay.
Bps [300:1200:2400]
Sets one of the baud rates indicated above. Default is 2400 bps.
Dial [Tone] [Pulse] [phone number]
Dials the requested phone number. Parameters are:
Tone – activates touch-tone dialing. Default is tone.
Pulse – activates pulse dialing.
Optional commas – provide a one second pause. Default is no pause.
Retry – Redials last phone number.
Logout – Exits Outdial.
Help or ? – Prints this screen.

NOTES: * Dialed number need not be preceded by “9”.
* In some locations, long-distance numbers must be preceded by “1”.

If, at this point, you wish to connect with a BBS whose phone number is,
for example, 555-1212, you would enter at the “>” prompt, the string
“d 5551212”. This causes the outdial modem to dial the number and connect
you at 2400 bps. If the host BBS only has 1200 bps modems, you would need
to first enter “bps 1200” at the “>” prompt. This sets the outdial modem
to call the host at 1200 bps rather than 2400 bsp.

If the BBS is busy you will usually receive a “BUSY” indicator, at which
point you can type “r” to redial the number or “logout” to disconnect and
return to the “please log in” prompt. At the “please log in” prompt, you
may simply disconnect.

What does the connect string mean?

TYMNET ASYNC OUTDIAL 6986 (804) 857 NORFOLK , VA

: : :
Outdial Port # Area Code Local exchange

TymNet permits you to make long distance calls from the outdial port.
You can determine if a BBS can be reached with a local call from an outdial
port by calling the operator in the destination city and asking if it is a
local call from the exchange. For example: Virginia Beach exchange 495 is
a local call from Norfolk exchange 857. If the BBS is outside the local
dialing area, you can still reach it by putting a “1” in front of the
number at the “>” prompt. Example: “d 15551212”. ALL LONG DISTANCE TOLL
CHARGES WILL BE CHARGED TO YOU!

ERROR MESSAGES AND PROBABLE CAUSES

The following are common error messages and some causes:

HOST OUT OF PORTS
All available outdial modems at the outdial city are in use.

BUSY
The host BBS’s phone lines are all busy.

CALL FAILED FOR UNKNOWN REASON
Usually indicates that a voice answered the phone call. Call the number by
voice to determine if it is still a viable number.

Can also be caused by low quality modem on the BBS or the BBS only
operating at 1200 bps. Try the “bps 1200” cure mentioned above.

Can also mean the BBS has all lines in use and the modem did not detect the
busy signal.

MODEM TIMED ITSELF OUT – CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE
Modem malfunction or all BBS lines are busy. Please report this to TYMNET
at 800-336-0149 immediately.

SUGGESTIONS

There are some methods you can use to improve the TymNet service from
your end. The two most common complaints and the easiest to cure are file
transfer speedups and interactive response speedups.

To improve file transfers:

Enter a control-V before typing in your TymNet username. Example:
“STA000000;password”. This means hold down your control key and tap the
“V” key before entering your Username. This opens up the band width and
imporves transfer time.

To improve interactive response time:

Enter a control-I before your TymNet username. Example:
” STA000000;password”. Enter this the same way as the example above and
the response time through the network will be faster. Perfect for chatting
or e-mail, etc.

Members calling a 2400 Baud BBS using a 1200 Baud modem can improve
file transfers and reduce error messages by putting control-X control-R
before the Username when logging on to the network. This enables X-on,
X-off flow control and prevents the BBS from sending data to you faster
than you can accept it. Never use Control-X, Control-R together with
Control-V. It will really make a mess of things.

FILE TRANSFERS

Almost all BBS software requires that you transfer files at 8 data bits, No
parity and 1 stop bit. If you are having trouble with file transfers this
will usually be the problem. If you cannot access the network from your
local number at 8-N-1 and must log on at 7-E-1, have your software switch
to 8-N-1 after you have entered the “>d #######” command and before the BBS
connects. Some BBS software doesn’t care what settings you use until you
try to transfer a file. To prevent wasting valuable network time, it’s
best to assume that you need 8-N-1 and change to that setting prior to
attempting a transfer. Please be sure that if you have striped your high
bits, you now turn them back on before transfers!

Rumors of Worms and Trojan Horses by Mike Guffey

RUMORS OF WORMS AND TROJAN HORSES
Danger Lurking in the Public Domain
introduced and edited by Mike Guffey

-INTRODUCTION
There are literally thousands of free (or nearly free) programs
available in computerdom’s Public Domain. Those who use them save
hundreds of dollars and thousands of hours. But many sneer at the
idea of anything worthwhile being “free”. Thus personal computing
becomes divided into two camps: those who believe there are two
camps and the rest who use Public Domain software (but sport
no sense of moral superiority). For several years now rumors
have circulated about dangerous programs which, when run,
infest the innards of personal computers like parasites.
And unlike most software, these insideous programs don’t go
away when the power is shut off. The story is they invade
ROMs and “eat” memory away each time hardware is powered up.
The legends have a basis in fact. For such horrors =do= exist
in the world of mainframes. Probably first created by a bored
or disgruntled programmer, such programs have been unleashed
inside some of this country’s largest computers. Generally,
they are not outwardly visible, but begin the attack like a
low grade fever. And these horrible little strings of code do
damage a little at a time, slowly building in intensity. At
first, things start going slightly awry. Ultimately, the
system crashes or must be shut down. One recent magazine
article called these creations “computer viruses”. Just =how=
damaging such programs can be (or have been) has not been
fully publicized. But the facts lie on a razor’s edge
between science fiction and tomorrow’s headlines. They are
believed to pose a serious potential threat to national
security. Some say the first of such monsters appeared on
computer bulletin boards (BBS’s) named “WORM.COM”. [Remember
that it is only recently that any online descriptions began to
be posted next to program names. Some BBS’s, notably CP/M
based systems, still do not offer any explanation beyond the
program name or notes in the associated message base part of the
system.] And almost every computer user group has at least
one experienced member who can tell the horrible tales of
what these programs do. Actual witnesses to the destruction or
victims of the atrocities seem to be =very= rare. Related to
the twisted thinking behind such criminal mischief is the
so-called “TWIT” phenomenon. Twits are computer vandals who
glory in breaking into and “crashing” or seriously damaging
remote computer systems. The targets range from neighborhood
BBS’s to any large computers which can be accessed via phone
lines. And while such mental midgets have been glorified in the
media and mis-labeled as “hackers”, their very existence causes
hysteria in and amongst the non-computing public at large.
Computer security for large and small remote computer systems is
getting better at screening out or scaring off “twits”. But they
still exist. There are indications that some have graduated from
incessant attempts to break into BBS’s. Instead they bring forth
Trojan horses: damaging programs disguised as utilities and
mis-labled or misdocumented as new treasures of the Public
Domain.
==]#[=== The following data was recently retreived from a
California BBS: WARNING! DANGEROUS PROGRAMS 1) Warning: Someone
is [or may be] trying to destroy your data. Beware of a SUDDEN
upsurge of [spurious] programs on Bulletin Boards and in the Public
Domain. These programs purport to be useful utilities, but, in
reality, are designed to sack your system. One has shown up as EGABTR,
a program that claims to show you how to maximize the features of
IBM’S Enhanced Graphics Adapter. It has also been spotted
renamed as a new super-directory program. It actually erases
the (F)ile (A)llocation (T)ables on your hard disk, [thereby
rendering all data useless and inaccessible]. For good measure,
it asks you to put a disk in Drive A:, then another in Drive B:.
After it has erased those FATs too, it displays,
” Got You! Arf! Arf! ” Don’t [casually] run any
public-domain program that is not a known quantity. Have
someone you know and trust vouch for it. ALWAYS examine it
FIRST with DEBUG [or DDT or a similar utility]. Look at
all the ASCII strings and data. If there is anything even
slightly suspicious about it, [either] do a cursory disassembly
[or discard it]. [For MSDOS programs] be wary of disk calls
(INTERRUPT 13H), especially if the program has no business
writing to the disk. Run your system in Floppy only mode
with write protect tabs on the disk or junk disks in the
drives. Speaking of Greeks bearing gifts, Aristotle said
that the unexamined life is not worth living. The unexamined
program [may not be] worth running. – from The Editors of PC
July 23, 1985 Volume 4, Number 15 2) Making the rounds of the
REMOTE BULLETIN BOARDS [is] a program called VDIR.COM. It is a
little hard to tell what the program is suppose to do. What it
actually does is TRASH your system. It writes garbage onto
ANY disk it can find, including hard disks, and flashes up
various messages telling you what it is doing. It’s a TIME BOMB:
once run, you can’t be sure what will happen next because it
doesn’t always do anything immediately. At a later time, though,
it can CRASH your system. Anyway, you’d do well to avoid
VDIR.COM. I expect there are a couple of harmless, perhaps even
useful, Public Domain programs floating about with the name VDIR;
and, of course, anyone warped enough to launch this kind of trap
once, can do it again. Be careful about untested “free”
software. [paraphrased from Computing at Chaos Manor From the
living Room By Jerry Pournelle BYTE Magazine, The small systems
Journal] Two other examples of this type of program: 1.
STAR.EXE presents a screen of stars then copies RBBS-PC.DEF
and renames it. The caller then calls back later and d/l the
innocently named file, and he then has the SYSOP’S and all the
Users passwords. 2. SECRET.BAS This file was left on an RBBS
with a message saying that the caller got the file from a
mainframe, and could not get the file to run on his PC, and asked
someone to try it out. When it was executed, it formatted all
disks on the system. We must remember, that there are a few
idiots out there who get great pleasure from destroying
other peoples’ equipment. Perverted I know, but we, the
serious computer users, must take an active part in fighting
against this type of stuff, to protect what we have. Be sure to
spread this [message] to other BBS’s across the country so that
as many people as possible will be aware of what is going on.
[from The Flint Board Flint, Mich (313) 736-8031]
===]#[=== -EPILOGUE Got your attention? There is
no need to hatchet your modem and erase your communications
software. While such programs can do tremendous damage, they
are, fortunately, very rare. The following is an
expansion of the countermeasures suggested above. A)
More?
Never, NEVER, N>E>V>E>R>! download and run Public Domain
software (the first time) on a hard disk. While many programs
are well known, it is a logical presumption that Trojan
horse-type programs may have been uploaded with the name of a
well-known utility. Or as a new version of one of your old
favorites. Download them to a blank floppy or to a disk you have
a current backup copy of. B) Get in the habit of examining
unknown software with HEX/ASCII utilities that will reveal
copyright data, documentation, program error and prompt messages.
A good choice in MSDOS is called PATCH.COM and in CP/M there
is DUMPX.COM. Even if a program is written in protected BASIC,
you may still be able to find some useful data this way.
[This is also a way to find documentation for good programs
without .DOC files or descriptions.] C) Be wary of text files
suggesting patches with DEBUG or DDT that you do not
understand. ALWAYS make such modifications to a backup copy of
your .COM, .EXE, .OVR files. There are no known examples of
Trojan horses appearing this way, but… D) Make those BBS’s
which screen programs before making them available your
first (but not your only) choice for acquiring new PD software.
If you cannot figure out what a program does, =don’t= upload
it to some other BBS. E) Be wary but not paranoid. Be careful
but not overcautious. Do not fan the fires of hysteria by
More?
passing along rumors of worms and Trojan horses. Speak of what
you =know=. There are alot of good programs out there in the

>

At the “>” prompt, you may type “help” and receive the following screen:

>help
Set [Half] [Rxon] [Xon] [Even|Space] [Crdelay]
Half – sets half-duplex communications. Default is full-duplex.
Xon – sets flow control for data you send. Default is no xon.
Rxon – sets flow control for data you receive. Default is no rxon.
Even – sets even parity for data sent. Default is no parity.
Space – sets space parity for data sent. Default is no parity.
Crdelay – set printer carriage return delay. Default is no delay.
Bps [300|1200|2400]
Sets one of the baud rates indicated above. Default is 2400 bps.
Dial [Tone] [Pulse] {phone number}

SVCS is a non-profit corporation dedicated to mutual assistance and
information exchange concerning the IBM PC, compatible computers, and related
software. We hold a meeting of the general membership each month. We also
have monthly meetings of various special interests groups (SIGs). Some of our
current SIGs are the NEW USERS SIG, TELECOM SIG, BUSINESS/FINANCIAL SIG, FORTH
SIG, GRAPHICS SIG, SOFTWARE TOOLS SIG, and SOFTWARE LIBRARY SIG. A newsletter
of about 20 pages with a circulation of 800 is mailed to members each month.

We maintain a growing software library (over 70 diskettes as of June 1984) of
public domain and non-commercial software. Both a catalog booklet and
a diskette resident catalog of the contents of our library is available.
The diskette resident catalog has an interactive menu-driven program for
automated interrogation of a categorized data base. Write or call to request a
membership information packet and software order forms.

:::::::::
::Welcome::
:::::::::

Weclome to Super Dial 1.03. I had not planned to ever write any more
vesions of Super Dial after I released 1.00, but my mind has been changed. I
started to get complaintsabout version 1.00 and didn’t want my “Programming
Image” flawed. As wonderfully simple as a wardialer is, version 1.00 had TOO
MANY bugs. You had to reboot to exit the program, it wouldn’t run on some
machines, the dialing delay was set a 30 seconds (hell for tone dialing users!),
it had no terminal program, it would default to 1200 baud, it forgot to save
some carriers, it locked up on 2400 baud carriers, it was easy to hack, it only
used com1, it wasn’t very attractive, and it had terrible documentation. Well,
all of these problems have been solved in version 1.03.

::::::::::::::::::::::
::What is a wardialer?::
::::::::::::::::::::::

Okay, a wardialer is a primary and important tool of computer hackers.
Picture this, you are a hacker, and there is a bank computer across the street
you’d like to hack but you can’t get the phone number !!??!! Okay, you just get
out your favorite wardialer (Super Dial 1.03) and set it up to call all of your
town (or cities) phone numbers. Now, this is the hard way, and if you can find
out in what range the other computer’s phone number is (by looking at the
numbers for other lines in the bank) it works much faster.
The second, and most popular use of a wardialer is to find BBS’s. It,
when given instructions, can start at a certain phone number, and dial all the
numbers till it gets to the second number specified. Okay, I want to see if
there are any BBS’s in my town, so I’d tell the wardialer to dial 555-0000 to
555-9999. It would dial all the numbers in between, and including 5550000 and
5559999 sequentially till it reached 5559999 at which time it would stop. Now
this is pointless, right ? Wrong ! If your modem finds a carrier signal on the
other end of the line, it would connect, and the wardialer would make a note on
disk that there is a carrier at the end of that number.
You see, this program does have a purpose after all !

::::::::
::Set-Up::
:::::::

Okay, now this program is SO easy to set up, even a degenerate like a
Cleveland Browns fan could run it. Okay, copy all the files to a disk ro a
directory on your hard drive, and from the command line, type:

SUPERD

Now Super Dial will run it’s built in set-up program and ask you a few
questions. Make sure that you fill out each question correctly, and you’ve
completed them you will be returned to DOS. Now re-run Super Dial (with the
command ‘SUPERD’) and the main program will load.
The menu options are very straight-forward and shouldn’t cause any
problems. To re-configure after the initial first-run just delete the file
SUPERD.CFG from your disk, and follow the instructions above.

:::::::
::Hints::
:::::::

The program is easy to use and contains the few needed features of a war
dialer.
To stop a dialing sequence, just press ESCape and you will be taken to
the main menu.
