Backdoor in Linksys and Netgear routers

backdoor-linksys copy

This news could hurt the reputation of both companies. A passionate (and obviously very competent) reverse-engineer from France, Eloi Vanderbeken forgot the admin interface password of his router and so he just wanted to have fun accessing the administration side and that’s when he discovered a backdoor in his Linksys WAG200G router. After publishing this discovery on Github, other users have confirmed its existence in at least three other routers:

  • Netgear DM111Pv2
  • Linksys WAG320N
  • Linksys WAG54G2

Other routers are suspected of providing equal opportunity to obtain the administrator password through the 32764 port, but it has not yet been confirmed:

  • Netgear DG934
  • Netgear DG834
  • Netgear WPNT834
  • Netgear DG834G
  • Netgear WG602
  • Netgear WGR614
  • Netgear DGN2000
  • Linksys WAG120N
  • Linksys WAG160N
  • Linksys WRVS4400N

The backdoor listens for communications sent to port 32764 specifically and answers a series of 13 numbered commands that can be ordered by sending a specific message. It is therefore possible to obtain the complete remote configuration of the router, the administrator password or even restore default settings.

PASSWORDS
———

EVEN THOUGH THE PASSWORD “MASK” IS 12 CHARACTERS LONG THE ACTUAL PASSSWORDS ARE ONLY 9 CHARACTERS LONG… THE FORMAT IS LIKE THIS…

N,LNNNNNN

WHERE N IS A NUMERICAL DIGIT AND L IS ALPHABETICAL… MOST PASSWORDS ARE CONFIGURED LIKE THIS…

9,XNNNNNN

THOUGH THE STORE MANAGERS WILL BE

8,XNNNNNN

THIS NARROWS THE PASSWORD DOWN TO SIX NUMARICAL DIGITS (1,000,000 POSSIBLITIES) THE REAL SECRET TO GETTING THE PASSWORD HACKED WILL BE DISCUSSED LATER.

AT THIS POINT WHETHER YOUR PASSWORD WAS GOOD OR NOT YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS…

THE USER ID FORMAT IS EASILY FIGURED… MOST USER ID’S WILL BE

MS<4 DIGIT STORE NUMBER><2 DIGIT USER NUMBER>

THE USER NUMBERS TEND TO START AT 01 AND GO UP TOWARD 99 HOWEVER YOU WONT FIND 99… THERE WILL ONLY BE A FEW AT THE BEGINING… THE STORE MANAGERS USER ID WILL BEGIN “MM” INSTEAD OF “MS” AND SHOULD BE

MM<4DIGIT STORE NUMBER>01

TO GET THE STORE NUMBER JUST CALL A MCDONALDS AND ASK THEM. ONE VALID STORE (IN DETROIT) IS 7025. THE MANAGERS ID IS THUS—

MM702501

ANOTHER LIKELY ID WOULD BE

AND SO ON…

TRASHING MCDONALDS
——————

MCDONALDS MANAGERS EACH NIGHT CALL UP THE SYSTEM AND REPORT ON SALES, PAY STOCK ETC. THE TERMINAL USED IS A TI SILENT 700 THERMAL PRINTER AND IT IS THE DOT MATRIX PATTERN OF THIS PARTICULAR PRINTER THAT FINALLY GAVE ME THE KEY TO HACK MCDONALDS. THE MANGER WHEN DONE WITH THE SYSTEM USUALLY JUST THROWS THE COMPUTER PRINTOUT WITH THE LOG IN IN THE TRASH… IF YOU GO THROUGH THE MCDONALDS DUMPSTER YOU CAN GET THESE SHEETS AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE KEY TO HACK THE SYSTEM. THE SHEET WILL HAVE THE 12 CHARACTR “BLOTT OUT” WHICH CAN BE DECIPHERED BECAUSE IT LEAVES 4 DOTS IN THE MATRIX EMPTY… WHEN THE USER TYPES THEIR PASSWORD OVER THE “BLOT OUT” THEY PVHTz9ORE MORE OF THESE 4 TINY DOTS WITH THE NEW CHARACTER. THE FOLLOWING IS A DOT MATRIX DECODER.

Hacking Western Union’s Easylink

         HACKING WESTERN UNION'S EASYLINK
         --------------------------------

By BIOC Agent 003 & Tuc TucBBS

          Uploaded by Elric of Imrryr

Easylink is a system that allows you to send
Telex, Telex II (TWX), mailgrams, telegrams,
cablegrams, and a few others.
First, either dial the local # or (800)
325-4112 (for 300 baud). It will respond with
EASYLINK, followed by ID? At this point, you
should enter the code, which is in the format of:

     01 ESL###### USERNAME.PASSWORD

     Where:
01 - says your are using full duplex
ESL - says your are using Easylink
           ###### - a 6 digit account code
           USERNAME.PASSWORD - just that

Once on, it will respond with a connection #,
the date, and time. You will then see PTS, which
stands for Proceed To Select. You can then type
"/HELP" to see what you can do with the system.
If you want to send a Telex, type the telex #
followed by a plus(+). It will then respond with
GA which stands for Go Ahead.
Now type in the text. To send the text and
stay on Easylink type lLLL; to send it and log off
type MMMM. To abort the message, type EEEE. It
will then say either "ACCEPTED" followed by a # or
"MESSAGE DISCARDED."
If you want to send a mailgram, type:

     /ZIP
     WHO TO
     ADDRESS 1
     ADDRESS 2 (optional)
     CITY ST ZIP+

Make sure that the zip is followed by a plus
(+). At the GA, type in the message and terminate
it with LLLL. With mailgrams the return address
belongs to whoever owns the account. More on
changing this info in part II, or if you penetrate
the system before then, write to us c/o TAP.
For info on sending telegrams, editing, etc.,
type "/HELP" after any PTS prompt and it will give
you a rundown.
If you just want to check out the system and
practice, log in using: 01 USR999999 TEST.TEST
This is their demo password. It no longer allows
you to send actual letters, though.
Another WU system that uses the same password
format is FYI (For Your Information). It is at
(800) 325-NEWS (6397) and it carries UPI news and
other "goodies." Once on type CATALOG or UPIINDEX
for help. Unfortunately, the demo password no
longer works on this system.

LOGON PROCEDURE
---------------

FIRST CALL A TELENET ACCESS PORT... ONE OF THE FOLLOWING WILL DO...

1-800-424-9494
1-313-996-5995
1-313-964-2988
1-313-235-8517

YOU WILL NEED TO BE SET UP FOR "NO ECHO". CALL UP THE TELENET ACCESS NUMBER AND YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS...

TELENET

313 19A

TERMINAL=

WHEN YOU SEE THE "TERMINAL=" PROMPT YOU MAY TYPE "D1", "A2" OR JUST <CR>. THE SYSTEM WILL THEN RESPOND WITH...

@

YOU WILL NEED TO TYPE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING "C 313 160" OR "C 312 160". THIS WILL PRINT DOUBLE CHARACTERS SINCE YOU ARE SET UP FOR NO ECHO... YOUR SCREEN WILL THEN LOOK LIKE THIS...

TELENET

313 19A

TERMINAL=AA22

@CC  331133  116600

313 160 CONNECTED

PASSWORD
XXXXXXXXXXX
IIIIIIIIIII
HHHHHHHHHHH

IF YOU OPERATE WITHOUT LINEFEEDS THE LAST THREE LINES WILL PRINT OVER EACH OTHER... ON A PRINTER THIS FORMS AN ALMOST SOLID BLOCK.

PASSWORDS
---------

EVEN THOUGH THE PASSWORD "MASK" IS 12 CHARACTERS LONG THE ACTUAL PASSSWORDS ARE ONLY 9 CHARACTERS LONG... THE FORMAT IS LIKE THIS...

N,LNNNNNN

WHERE N IS A NUMERICAL DIGIT AND L IS ALPHABETICAL... MOST PASSWORDS ARE CONFIGURED LIKE THIS...

9,XNNNNNN

THOUGH THE STORE MANAGERS WILL BE

8,XNNNNNN

THIS NARROWS THE PASSWORD DOWN TO SIX NUMARICAL DIGITS (1,000,000 POSSIBLITIES) THE REAL SECRET TO GETTING THE PASSWORD HACKED WILL BE DISCUSSED LATER.

AT THIS POINT WHETHER YOUR PASSWORD WAS GOOD OR NOT YOU WILL SEE SOMETHING LIKE THIS...

PORT = $X25G00 #VC03    ON AT 00:00 CT,  00 FEB 1986
USERID: ?

USERID
------

THE USER ID FORMAT IS EASILY FIGURED... MOST USER ID'S WILL BE

MS<4 DIGIT STORE NUMBER><2 DIGIT USER NUMBER>

THE USER NUMBERS TEND TO START AT 01 AND GO UP TOWARD 99 HOWEVER YOU WONT FIND 99... THERE WILL ONLY BE A FEW AT THE BEGINING... THE STORE MANAGERS USER ID WILL BEGIN "MM" INSTEAD OF "MS" AND SHOULD BE

MM<4DIGIT STORE NUMBER>01

TO GET THE STORE NUMBER JUST CALL A MCDONALDS AND ASK THEM. ONE VALID STORE (IN DETROIT) IS 7025. THE MANAGERS ID IS THUS---

MM702501

ANOTHER LIKELY ID WOULD BE

MS702501

AND SO ON...

TRASHING MCDONALDS
------------------

MCDONALDS MANAGERS EACH NIGHT CALL UP THE SYSTEM AND REPORT ON SALES, PAY STOCK ETC. THE TERMINAL USED IS A TI SILENT 700 THERMAL PRINTER AND IT IS THE DOT MATRIX PATTERN OF THIS PARTICULAR PRINTER THAT FINALLY GAVE ME THE KEY TO HACK MCDONALDS. THE MANGER WHEN DONE WITH THE SYSTEM USUALLY JUST THROWS THE COMPUTER PRINTOUT WITH THE LOG IN IN THE TRASH... IF YOU GO THROUGH THE MCDONALDS DUMPSTER YOU CAN GET THESE SHEETS AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE KEY TO HACK THE SYSTEM. THE SHEET WILL HAVE THE 12 CHARACTR "BLOTT OUT" WHICH CAN BE DECIPHERED BECAUSE IT LEAVES 4 DOTS IN THE MATRIX EMPTY... WHEN THE USER TYPES THEIR PASSWORD OVER THE "BLOT OUT" THEY PVHTz9ORE MORE OF THESE 4 TINY DOTS WITH THE NEW CHARACTER. THE FOLLOWING IS A DOT MATRIX DECODER.
